ELTHAM SPORTS.

SECOND ANNUAL MEETING. _ SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The second annual sports meeting held by the Elthani Cycle Racing and Athletic Club took place at Taumata Park, Elthani, yesterday, and despite the postponement from last Monday the gathering was a successful one and some interesting sport was provided. The attendance was estimated at about one thousand. The Eitham Brass. Band was in attendance.

The events were all got off well up to time, and all the arrangements were carried out without a hitch, although the times between, the running of the various events were somewhat long. The officials were: Field marshal, Mr. Heyes; starter, Mr. A. Whiting; judges, Messrs. T. C. Scanners, C. Cooper and B. Johnson; handicapper, Mr. C. Burke; stewards, Messrs. Fitzgibbons, Manley, Kenny, Bicheno, Collingwood, Hemingway, T. Bennett, Beesley, Shipton, Davis, Hooper, Cumming, Cuff, Winters and Clement; secretary, Mr. H. A. Nuttall; assistant secretary, A. Finch. Catering was in the hands of Mr. Wilson, of Eitham. The following are detailed results : RUNNING EVENTS. 100 Yards Handicap.—First heat: L. Plant, 11yds, 1; S. Henry, 10yds, 2. Second heat: D. Foster. 10yds, 1; C. W. Davis, 9yds, 2. Third heat: E. Skellerup, 10yds, 1; F. Neagle, 10yds, 2. Final. E. Skellerup I, F. Neagle 2, C. W. Davis 3. Wbn easily. Time, lOsec. Times for the heats were not taken. 220 Yards Handicap.—First heat: L. Plant, 22yds, 1; C. W. Davis, 18yds, 2; time, 23sec. Second heat: C. S. Rye, 13yds, 1; J. O’Byrne, 18vds, 2; time, 24sec. Final: L. Plant 1, C. W. Davis 2, C. S. Rye 3. Won by two yards. Time, 23sec. 440 Yards Handicap.—L. Plant, 42yds. 1; C. W. Davis, 34yds, 2; C. Ansford, 40 yds, 3. Won by a foot after a good race. Time, 49 3-ssec. 880 Yards Handicap.—T. E. Taylor, 25 yds, 1; C. Davis, 50yds, 2; R. Sinclair, 65yds, 3. Won easily. 440 Yards School Championship (boys in Eitham district 13 years and under). —D. Coleman 1, D. Gower 2, Gibbons 3. Gower established a good lead on the field, but Coleman made a good late run and won by two or three yards. One Mile Handicap.—S. Simmonds, 130 yds, 1; J. Clarkson, 130yds, 2; R. Sinclair, 120yds, 3. Time, 4min 38 4-ssec. ’ High Jump.—A. McNeill, 3in, 1; W. Maxwell, 7in, 2; F, Foley, 2in, 3. Height, sft 6in. CYCLING EVENTS. Half-mile Cycle Handicap.—L. Coleman, 25yds, 1; W. Gemmell, 45yds, 2; A. Coleman, scr., 3. Gemmell led until entering the straight, when L. Coleman, who was on his wheel for most of the second lap, went on and won by two lengths, about seven lengths separating second and third. Time, Imin Msec. Two-mile Cycle Handicap.—A. C. Epping, 100yds, 1; L. Gemmell, 110yds, 2; R. Wheeler, 70yds, 3. Epping left the field starting on the second last lap, and went on to win by 35 yards. There was a good race for second place, the third man being only half a length back. Time, smin 19 3-5 sec. Three-Mile Cycle Handicap.—A. Coleman, scr., 1; W. J. Sharrock, 20yds, 2; D. Gemmell, 165yds, 3. A very exciting race. The back-markers caught the field on coming into the straight the last time, and a great finish resulted in Coleman leading Sharrock home by half a length, with less than a wheel between the next three. Time, Bmin 21 4-ssec. Five-Mile Cycle Handicap.—W. J. Sharrock, 25yds, 1; W. Parker, 60yds, 2; W. P. Sharrock, 3. A good finish between the three placed men. The first two kept together most of the journey. In an exciting sprint down the home straight W. J. Sharrock led the way by a little over a length, with the third man close up. Time, 14min 37 2-ssec. CHOPPING AND SAWING. 15-inch Single-Handed Sawing Handicap.—A. W. Volzke, 6sec, 1; C. H. Volzke, 3sec, 2; J. Paynter, Gsec, 3. Won easily. 15-inch Underhand Chop.—A. W. Volzke, 30sec, 1; J. Paynter, 25sec, 2; W. G. Dowman, 20sec, 3. Won easily. Double-handed Sawing (15-inch block). —J. Jensen and Dowman, 2sec, 1; C. H. and A. W. Volzke, 4sec, 2 ; J. Marriner and J. Paynter, ssec, and L. N. and E. V. Remnant, 7sec (dead heat), 3. A very close contest, w’ith only a fraction of a second between first and second.
