UNHAPPY DARWIN.
SEEKING AMERICAN AID. MEAT WORKS MAY RESUME. Sydney, Dec. 21, Claiming that the Northern Territory will never be regarded by the’ Federal Government as anything hut the Cinderella of the Commonwealth, the people of that troubled community are now looking abroad for assistance. A public meeting has just been held in Darwin. at which it was decided to send delegates to America to bring under the notice of American capitalists the vast potentialities of the Northern Territory jn respect to minerals and the production of cotton. The meeting was optimistic enough to consider that sufficient funds could be raised locally for the purpose. This silver lining to the cloud which has long overshadowed the unhappy Darwin residents has been since some-, what dimmed by a subsequent message stating that manv of the settlers at the top of the Gulf of Carpentaria are starvHowever, there is a possibility of an early improvement in affairs in the Territory, as Messrs. Vesty Bios, are contemplating the re-openinff of their mammoth meat works at Darwin lired of the Bolshevistic methods of the Dmnn unionists, the proprietors closed these works down some time ago. and Darwin practically to a standstill, itis understood that Vesty Bros, have urged that the Territory should be given representation in the Commonwealth Parliament, as a possible solution of tl-e residents’ principal grievance, winch was reflected in the action of the unionists toward Vesteys. The Prune Minister has promised "that this will be done during the next session of 1 arliament. In the meanwhile, the Federal_ Go'ernment has had to allocate .COOOO to provide work for the unemployed of t)ie Territory.
