PAPUAN TRADE.
DEPRESSION AGGRAVATED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Dec. 27. Judge Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, states that Papua’s depression has been aggravated since the Navigation Act was passed, as trade relations are confined practically to Sydney, through which Papuan purchases and produce must pass 1o and from England. Besides being a detour of 2000 miles this involves expenditure on storage and transhipment. Under such conditions agricultural expansion is impossible. Even if the right to trade with outside markets is restored it may “be too late, as trade, though buoyant and flourishing a few months ago, has now almost ceased to exist. Unless some remedy is forthcoming Australia will pay a heavy pric? for Papuan development.
