ONE MILLION FARMERS.

THE AUSTRALIAN MOVEMENT. Speaking at a Sydney picture theatre, where moving pictures were being shown as part of the Million Farmers’ Scheme propaganda, Sir Joseph Carruthers, M.L.C., announced that he had succeeded in convincing the Prime Minister Mr. Hughes, that the proposals would greatly help ; n the development of Australia if they were carried out with the co-op-eration of New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. If the Prime Minister could persuade the Premiers of the three States that the scheme was a good one, Sir Joseph Carruthers went on to say, that would be the commencement of the million farmers’ movement and the salvation of Australia. The proposal-which had been placed before the Prime Minister was for the development of 10.000,000 acres in the malee country of New South Wales immediately to the north of Wentworth, Mildura, Euston and Balranald, 2,000,000 acres south of Mildura in Victoria and 3,000.000 acres of adjoining country in South Australia. Mr. Garland, Senator-elect, in proposing a vote of thanks to Sir Joseph Carruthers, said that Sir Joseph could have had the position to which he (the speaker) had been elected in the Senate of the Commonwealth but for his enthusiasm in the- great scheme to the carrying out of which he was devoting his time, his eloquence and his intellectual activity. Sir Joseph could count upon his support inside and outside the Senate.
