UNION COMPANY’S KARITANE. ALL THE CREW LANDED. NO HOPE FOR VESSEL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 27, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 27. The Un : on Company’s steamer Karitane (1376 tons), en route from Devonport to Port Kembla with a full cargo of copper ore and produce, went ashore on Deal Island, in Bass Straits, on Saturday night. The Karitane has no wireless and the news reached Melbofirne only last night by wire'ess from the steamer Ceduna, which Is standing by till a tug despatched to the ecajie arrives.

The Karirane’s crew, numbering about thirty, were landed safely on the island. The steamer’s holds are reported, to be full of water. The vessel practicallysunk, and there is little hope of either the vessel or the cargo being saved.— Aais.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ACCIDENT DURING FOG. VESSEL STRIKES HEAVILY. Received. Dec. 27, 11 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 27. The chief engineer of the Karitane states they encountered a thick fog on, Saturday morning and speed was reduced. Suddenly he received the command “full speed astern” and some time later the Karitane struck heavily and water poured in everywhere.
