After a lengthy illness there passed away on Monday afternoon, at her home, in her Sot'll year, Mrs. .Tames Staples, of Manakau. Mrs. Staples who- was f one of Manakau’s earliest^settlers, had lived to gain the esteem or all who knew her.

Mr. E. C; Barleyman,, who has been secretary o£. the Kaupokonui Dairy Company for over twenty-four years, is relinquishing hie duties shortly. He has seen the company progress from a small factory to one of the -largest in the Dominion.
The death occurred at Wellington a few days ago of Mr. Amos Wilby, aged 85 years. He was born in England. In the pioneering days he drove a tram between Greymouth and Kumara, and previously he was an alluvial miner, and kept a , store at Kumara. He went to Wellington many years ago, and was appointed chief messenger at the House A Dunedin message reports the death on Christmas Day of Mr. Dugald McPherson. at the age of 75, of the firm of McPherson and Kemp. He was thiice president of the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen’s Association of New Zealand and once president of the United Association of Australasian He was also chief of the Gaelic Society for 20 years and a member of many other local bodies. He was a prominent Mason.
The death occurred suddenly on Christmas morning, at his residence at Wellington, of Mr. Finlay Bethune, headmaster of the Newtown School, one of the best-known and most capable teachers in the Wellington Education Board’s district. The late Mr. Bethune, who was a man of active and athletic nature, was in harness to the last, and was in his accustomed place when the Newtown School broke up for the holidays on Friday last. The late Mr. Bethune, who was 59 years of age, was born in Skye/ and came out parents when quite a lad.
The death occurred at Tauranga re r cently, at the age of 95 years, of Mr. Garratt Goughian, a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, who went to Tasmania in the very early days, and thence to Christchurch. There he was engaged by the late Mr. Matson with whom he remained for some j-ears. Afterwards he went south to Balfour, where he was engaged by the Messrs. Dickson, of Moutere. He stayed with Mr. Andrew Dickson for upwards of 30 years, and proved himself to be a most valued and honest servant a worker of the old school. When Mr. Dickson removed north nine years ago Mr. Garratt Coughlan went too, and remained with him till his end came. He was once wc-11-known in racing circles.
At the breaking-up ceremony at the Manaia Public School on Friday, December 16, a presentation was made to Miss D. M. Mead, who has for some years been a member of the teaching staff, and has now resigned from that position. It took the form of a handsome electric kettle, accompanied by a case of silver teaspoons and silver bread fork. Mr. 1. A. Bridge, chairman of the School Committee, in making the presentation on behalf of the pupils, referred in very appreciative and eulogistic terms to Miss Mead’s services whi'le she was a teacher, and on behalf of the School Committee and parents of the children wished her a happy and prosperous future. Mrs. J. A. McKenna, of Patea, died from heart failure on Friday morning. The deceased lady, who was highly esteemed in the neighbourhood, had been in frail health for some time, but appeared to be improving recently. She was born at Malmsbury, Victoria, and came over with her parents to Southland, and thence to Taranaki, arriving in the Hawera district in 1878. She had resided, continuously in Patea since her marriage, 34 years ago. She leaves, besides her husband, three sons, Mr. L. A. McKenna (Sydney), Mr. F. S. McKenna (Patea), and Mr. Fred McKenna (Hawera), together with two daughters. Miss Eileen McKenna and Mrs. J. J. Bourke, and is survived by seven brothers —Messrs. J. 1. Quin (Eltham), Joseph Quin (Hawera), H. M. Quin (Otorohanga), .A. Quin Frank Quin (Te Awamiitu), Alf. Quin (Karori), and Fred Qum (Hawera).
