SPORTING.

T.J.C. CHRISTMAS MEETING. SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY. PINE ARCH WINS CHRISTMAS HANDICAP. The Taranaki Jockey Club was favored with beautiful weather yesterday for the opening day of the club’s Christmas carnival, which had been postponed from the previous day owing to the wet weather. There was a very large attendance. It proved a most enjoyable day’s sport, for the course was in excellent order, and the appointments were in their usual firstclass order, a tribute to the work of the club’s custodian (Mr. Blewman). The racing wsa very interesting, fields being good and finishes close. Mr. H, Coyle, as handicapper, had concealed the winners well, only two actual favorites saluting the judge first. The big race drew a field of nine. The veteran Volo was made favorite, but victory went to the Aucklander, Pine Arch, who led nearly all the way. The open six furlong event went to the Hawera-owned Egmont Park. Both wins were well received. The starting was in the hands of Mr. A. Vincent, who despatched his fields well, whilst Mr. J. Cameron, as judge, hoisted his numbers promptly and correctly. The totalisator staff, under Mr. L. Rea, had a busy day, for though the machine only handled £31,348, as compared with £44,337 for the first day last year, a decrease of £12,989, there was a considerable run on the 10s ticket windows, which entailed more work. There is no question that the provision of adequate 10s tote windows was more than justified.

The day passed without any untoward ; incident. Mr. G. E. Curry, stipendiary ' steward, was present, but found nothing to cavil at. Mr. E. P. Webster, as secretary, again had made complete arrangements to make the gathering successful and popular with all, and he was assisted by a curteous and capable staff. The catering arrangements this year were in the hands of Mr. Findlay, of the Hygienic Bakery, whilst the booth was again under the control of Mr. E. Whittle. The 4th Battalion Wellington Regimental Band, under Conductor Robert L. Lowe, rendered a splendid programme of music. Detailed results are: HUATOKI PLATE, of 175 sovs., second 35 sovs. and third 15 sovs. Seven furlongs. 2 W. P. Nicoll’s b.m. Dactylis, syrs, by Formby—Queen Mary, 8.11 (E. Manson) 3 E. Whittle’s ch.r. From a good start Attent was first to show out, but after a couple of furlongs Crossfire took up the running, followed by Ardath, and led into the straight, where Dactylis came with a well-judged run and got home by half a length, with Semper Idem two lengths awaj J .
