PACKING FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

It is rather surprising in these days that some enterprising person does not think, of giving lessons or demonstrations in packing. Not all of us have the art of packing a large quantity of clothes into a limited space, and a little practical information on the subject would be very valuable. Now that travelling is so difficult we most of us try to manage with as little luggage as possible, and the problem of how much one can get into a suitcase is not always easy to solve. Yet wonders can be performed by a good packer. For family packing the hold-all is invaluable. It is light and easy to handle an<l will hold numberless things that are difficult to put in elsewhere. Boots, tennis shoes, bathing costumes, and waterproofs, can all be put into the hold-all, and it is surprising to find what a quantity of things it will carry. Its big pocket will take all the odds and ends so often forgotten until the last minute, and it is a great comfort to have one compact bundle instead of many little ones, especially in these days of crowded trains and few porters. Few people seem to realise how well a hat will travel in a suit case. Not a picture hat, of course, with delicate curves in the brim; but an ordinary knock-about hat, provided it is not too large, should present no difficulties. Fill the crown of the hat as full as possible with soft articles—anything hard or cornery will damage the straw —then lay the hat right way up on the bottom of the case, fasten the brim down to the lining of the case with two or three ordinary pins, and then pack round about taking care not to put anything heavy on the top. If the hat has ribbon on it this should be padded with tissue paper to keep it from getting crushed. Underclothes and thin blouses often crush less if rolled instead of folded in a small case.
