BOOKS FOR BACK-BLOCKS. LETTERS OF* 1 APPRECIATION. Letters have been received from Mokau expressing thanks for books which, were sent out in response, to an appeal received by the Victoria ' League. One, however, is of more than ordinary interest, inasmuch as it tells of the very great difficulties under whidh some of these people live, and incidentally tells the story of how one box of books sent out . last year did not reach its destination until quite recently. The box was sent to Tatu, in the King Country, anti the letter states: -The reason I could not get them sooner was I did not send the money for the freight to the railway at Ongarue, and they would not send them to Kohuratahi without. Then I gave the money for the freight to a bullock driver to take, and for some reason or other he did not get them. And so it got too late, and winter came on, and the bullock waggons in for the winter. Then J sent the fellow a letter, and at last he got them to Ohura. an<l then 1 got a cream waggon to bring them to Tatu.. the nearest settlement to here (six miles), and t went out with a pack horse and got them home last week, after a long delay and many miles of travelling." The letter also goes on to say that there are only three settlers out in that] part, anil any books forwarded- are shared amongst them. Those for children are very acceptable. This particular settler has two children, one a girl of nine years who had to be boarded out at Tahora in order to get her education, and the family, at the time of writing the letter (December 20), were just rejoicing at her return home for the holidays.
