PLEA FOR A TRUCE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—CopyrigtL Calcutta. Dee. 21. Lord Ronald shay, Governor of Bengal, delivered an important speech at the meeting of the Legislative Council in Calcutta. He that Lord Reading's promise to receive a deputation representative of the leaders had introduced a new factor. It was generally agreed that a truce was an essential preliminary to anv conference. If he was satisfied' that the extremist leaders were prepared to take action to this end he would Le prepared to recommend the Government to take action in consonance with the altered situation. Nothing had exasperated feeling so much a* the attitude of non-eo-operators the Prince’s visit. If the boycott was a band o net 1 and the hartal called off Jie was prepred to recommend the Government to stay its hand so far as it was compatible with public safety. If the non-co-operators cried a halt in their hostile activities he would recommend that the pending prosecutions be suspended and those charged released. Delhi. Dec. 21. Numerous arrests are still being made everywhere. There have been 200 in Cal--utta alone. Of 263 tried on Monday, 25 «vcra convicted.
