AN OBSERVATORY PROPOSAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. Interviewed to-day with regard to a new observatory which, it has been stated, the Carter bequest committee of the New Zealand Institute is about to erect in Wellington at a cost of £2OOO, Professor Eastfield, who is president of the New Zealand Institute and is chairman of the trustees, stated that he was sure there was some mistake. The committee mentioned was merely an advisory committee, and its recommendations had not yet been put before the trustees. It was quite possible that the trustees could not legally give effect to suggestions of the committee even if they approved of them. GOAL MINES RESUME. Auckland, Last Night. The mines of the Taupiri Mines, Ltd., and the Pukemiro coal mine, which were idle yesterday afternoon, resumed today, an ample supply of trucks being available. INSPECTION OF MACHINERY, Dunedin. Last Night. The Otago Ironmasters’ Association is protesting against the proposal io place the Inspection of Machinery Def»artment under the control of the Pubic Works Department and the Customs Department. The following telegram was to-day forwarded to the Prime Minister: “The Otago Ironmasters’ Association view with apprehension the breaking up of the Inspection of Machinery Department and placing it under the control of Public Works and Customs. We earnestly suggest that the department, which is a highly technical one, should remain under the undivided control of its expert officers.”
