THE TARANAKI MEETING. GOOD PROSPECTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting on Monday and Tuesday will be the holii day outing for many people through out Tara- ' naki, and even further afield. Special train services are being run in connection with the gathering. Racing should be keen and there is a good number of outside competitors. Six horses were landed from Auckland yesterday, and with three earlier arrivals make a total of* nine from the north, while two lots of Canterbury horses arrived on Thursday. The course is in good order, and tl?e lawns and flower beds present a pleasing picture at the present time. The appointments’ are also well-kept, and the new concrete loose boxes erected recently by the club will no doubt be appreciated by owners. General arrangements for the convenience of racegoers hare not been overlooked by the comunittee, and the catering and publican’s booth are in capable hands.
The services of the 4th Battalion Wellington Regiment Band have been secured to render programmes on both days. The loose boxes are ten in yumber, each 10 x 12 feet, with eight feed rooms. The building, which is situate on the western side of the cottage on the property recently acquired by the club at the back of the course, is built of ferro concrete, and the boxes are well protected from the win<L_ by high live hedges. Special attention tas been devoted to ventilation, and in every other respect they are thoroughly up-to-date. Mr. Bates was the architect, and Messrs. Tong and Co., Hawera, the contractors.
Six horses from the north which are engaged at tjie Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting arrived by the Rr,rawa this morning with their trainers. Messrs. Scally, Tutchen, Tinker and Rawkins. Last Night. An Inquest was held to-day concerning the death of an apprentice jockey named William Moylan, aged fifteen, who was riding Heathermoon at the Taka puna races on November 2G, And died in hospital two days later as the result, of internal injuries sustained when the horse fell. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, stating that no blame was attachable to anyone. One jockey, in evidence, said deceased appeared to try to obtain a position on the outside of Esthonia. He thought Heathermoon must have struck its front feet on the heels of Esthonia.
There have been few more disappointing horses in New Zealand than Spanner (The Nut—Dudu). At three years his form was brilliant, and he was then bought by Messrs. Richmond and W. G. Stead, the price being not less than 2000gns. Taken to Sydney the following season, he failed to win, and as he continued to fail after his return to Nt»v Zealand he was sold at a comparatively low figure to Mr. Burch. The latter raced him. hut the bay’s recent efforts so thoroughly disgusted him that he gave him away to a resident of Hamilton. At latest Spanner was being used as a hack. It is mentioned by ;:n Auckland writer that although Desert Gold’s three-year-old sister. Aureate, has not yet raced this season, she is training on steely, and is expected to turn out well. Aurarius, who is 16 years old. recently threw a full brother to Desert Gold and Aureate. As is generally known Desert' Gold is by All Black from Aurarius by Malster from Aurous, by Wallace—Aura ; and E’l Dorado, one of the finest-looking two-year-olds at Randwick, in .my opinion, is by All Black from Auraria’s Daughter, by Pistol Auraria, by Trenton —Aura. He is owned by Mr. E. J. Watt, and is in the sanw stable as Lady Aura and Bellambi, G. I . Nailon training the trio. Exterminator, with 3.21 4-5, holds the American record fcr two miles, but it is on the cards it would have been lowered if anything , had proved equal to keeping the three-year- I old filly Bit of White going to tie end of the Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs (Louisville, Ky.) on October 22. As it was' with 8.3 she won by fifteen lengths in 3.22 2-5, the first half-mile being a run in 47 ■ l-ssec, mile in 1.38, mile and a h. if in 2.30 I 4-5, and mile and three-quarters in 2.57. She did the first two furlongs in 24 1-5 sec, and the last two in 25 3-ssec. which was I tall travelling at each end. Bit of, White is j English-bred, being by Sunstar from Dreamy LI., by Persimmon.
