WAITARA.
CRICKET CLUB k (From Our Own Correspondent.) Dec. 22. The Waitara Cricket Club held an extraordinary meeting in the Council Chambers on Monday evening to consider the secretary’s (Mr. Ellis) resignation, and to receive a statement in regard to the club’s finances. Mr. Ogle (president) occupied the chair. The secretary read the balance-
sheet, which had been audited by Mr Southwell, showing receipts about £5O, ex-
penditure £42, liabilities £8 and assets £3O, leaving a. credit balance of a few shillings. This, for a new club, was considered a good record. Mr. Ellis then handed in his resignation, which was accepted with regret, and a vote of thanks was carried for his services. Mr. Ellis then outlined his reasons for resign-
ing. He said that, being treasurer of the club, he had to look at the financial side, and thought that a member had no right to be picked by the selection committee unless he was financial. He stated that financial members had to stand down while' unfinancial members were picked to play. The committee explained the position, stating that although it was the intention at the start to follow that course it. was was felt to be a little too harsh in practice, as a lot of promising players had had “a bad spin” during the winter. At a subsequent committee meeting a minute was passed that all members shall be financial by December 31, or they will not be played. The management committee’s action in this respect was confirmed. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr. A. Pizzey, Mr. W. Fox and Mr. R. A. Taylor, for work gratuitously done for the club. GENERAL. The mart held last Friday by the Plunket Society proved a decided success, about £3O being taken. A feature was the bountiful supply of home-made bread, which found a ready sale. The competitions were won as follows: Christmas cake, Mrs. Beckbessinger; rug, Mrs. La Pouple; pair trousers, Mr. L. S. Baxter (Wanganui). On Sunday last the Waitara Methodist Church he’d their school anniversary services. A special feature was the singing of the children, who were trained by Mr. Ashworth. The Waitara School baths (which are also open for the general public at a yearljfee) were opened for the season this morning. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., has promised to interview the Minister of Public Works regarding his endorsement or otherwise of the Mokau electric power scheme. The owners of the steamship Huia sent advice to their agent that they are prepared to send their boat to Waitara next week, providing sufficient cargo was offering. Owing to the holidays, and stocks being well up for the Christmas trac|e, it is doubtful if this can be arranged.
