THE WOOL MARKET.

FIRST SALE AT DUNEDIN. GOOD TONE PREVAILS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night, A good selection of wools was forward at the first of the season’s series of Dunedin wool sales held to-day. The' number of bales offered totalled 10,800 and somewhere in the vicinity of 90 to 95 per cent, of the lots were sold. The catalogues contained a larger proportion of fine wools than is usual at the December sales. About one-third of the total offering was last season’s wool held over, and the difference in condition between these wools and the new season’s clip was very marked, the comparison being greatly in favor of the new clip. Bidding was spirited for super lots and good conditioned wools. Local mills were operating much more freely than last season, particularly for the small quantity of good, merinos on offer. The demand for all grades from Bradford was very consistent and prices relatively were above the parity of the last London sales. American sorts were scarce and the operations of their buyers were consequently limited. The Continent did not seem as active as usual. Buyers express the opinion that to-day’s sale showed a rise on recent northern auctions, but taking the conditions into account it is doubtful if the wools are appreciably dearer, though operators, who could buy freely in the north were certainly kept hard, at the full extent of! their limits to-day. Following is the range of prices realised:—Merino 14}d to 183 d, average ll£d to 14d, inferior B£d to lljd; fine halfbred super 13|d to 163 d, average IOAd to 13d, inferior 8d to lOd; medium halfbred super 12Jd to 16d, average 94d to 123 d, inferior 7d to 9d; coarser ha If bred supen 9d to 113d y average 7id to 84d, inferior 54d to 6£d; fine crossbred super * 7Jd to 1144, average Gd to 64d, inferior * 4|d to s?d; medium crossbred super 6sd to 83d; Merino good to average 4Jd to Gd, inferior to 44d; bellies and pieces Merino good to super pieces 7d to bellies 6|d to ,103<l: Merino low to medium pieces 5d to 7d, bellies 3d to sdi half bred good to super pieces 7£d vo 12d, bellies Gd to B|d; halfbred low to medium pieces 5d to Gd, bellies 4Jd to 6d; crossbred good to super pieces 54d j,o 7d, bellies 4d to 51d; crossbred low |to medium pieces 34d to 5Jd, bellies 2Jd to 4d; crutchings medium to good 34d to 4Jd, inferior fleecy Id to 3d; locks Merino 2d to 4£d, halfbred l£d to 3£d, crossbred lid to 2Jd.
