LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, elated December 17, from the High Counmissioner for New Zealand, London:— MEAT. No change in market, bqt somewhat better inquiry for best quality lamb at unaltered price. Beef in poor demand and closed below price quoted. Present quotations are:— New Zealand mutton.—Lightweight, December 17, December 10. sd, 5%d; December 3, 5%d to 5%d. Heavyweight, December 17, 4%.d, 4%d; December 10, 4’4d, 4%d; December 3, 4’Z»d, 4%d. Ewes, December 17, 4%d; December 3, 4 3-Bd. N.Z. lamb.—Lightweight, December 17, 7 5-Sd: December 10. 7 5-Sd; December 3, 7 5-Sd. Heavyweight, December 17, 7d, 7 l-8d; December 10, 6*4d. 7d; December 3, 6%d, 7d. N.Z. beef.—Ox, hinds, December 17, sd; December 10, sd; December 3, sd. Fores, December 17, 3%d; December 10, 3%d; December 3,4 d. BUTTER. Market continues weak and irregular owing to large supplies arriving from ail sources, and prices have declined further. Official quotations are:— New Zealand. —December 17, 150 s to 156 s per cwt., exceptional 158 s per cwt. (Is 4a, Is 4%d. Is 5d per lb.). December 40, 174 s to 180 s per cwt., exceptional 182 s per cwt. (Is ls 7 1 Ad. Is 7%d per lb.). December 3. 196 s to 200 s per cwt. (Is 9d, Is 9%d per lb.). Towards the end of this week much lower prices accepted, sales of New Zealand having been made as low as 145 s per cwt. (Is 3%d per lb). CHEESE. Market quiet and very little business doing. New Zealand.—December 17, white, 90s io 98s per cwt. (9%d to 10%d per lb.) ; colored, 90s to 96s per cwt. (9%d to IOHd per lb.). December 10, white, 100 s to 104 s per cwt. (lOd to lid per lb.) ; colored, 98s to 100 s per cwt. (10%d to 10%d per ib). December 3. white, 102 s to 106 s per cwt. (10%d to 11 M d per lb.) ; colored, 100 s to 104 s per cwt. (10%d to lid per lb.). CASEIN. Rennet, French unchanged at £6l to £64 per ton; British declined to £5B per ton. FROZEN MEAT MARKET. SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS. M. A. Elliott, Ltd. (Palmerston North), have received cable advice from Messrs. Gilbert Anderson and Co., Ltd., London, of the following Smithfield prices for tlie week ending December 17 : Canterbury lamb: Under 361 b., 7 5-8 d per lb.; 361 b. to 421 b.. 7 1-Sd; 421 b. to 501 b.. 7d. Best North Island lambs: Under 361 b., 7%d; 361 b. to 421 b., no quote; 421 b. to 501 b., no quote. Ordinary North Island lambs: Under 361 D., 7d; 361 b. to 421 b., no quote; 421 b. to 501 b., no quote. Canterbury’ wethers and maiden ewes: 481 b. to 561 b., 5%d; 561 b. to G4lb., no quote; 641 b. to 721 b., 4%d. 1 Best North Island wethers and maiden 481 b. to 561 b., no quote; 561 b. to 64ib., 5 1-Sd; 641 b. to 721 b., no quote. New Zealand prime beef (equal fores and hinds) : 1601 b. to 2201 b.. 4 3-Bd. Remarks.—Lamb market firmer, out no quotable advance. Mutton market dull, but do not think depression will last. Beef market dull and dropping. The above prices are on a delivered basis. The Bank of New Zealand, produce depart- - ment, has received the following advice from its London office, under date December 16:— Mutton market depressed owing to absence of demand. Supplies of tome-killed lamb are ’ shorter and an endeavor is being made to firm up prices. Beef market is depressed 1 owing to heavy arrivals of Argentine. Current quotations:—Wethers, light, 4%d to 5%d per lb.; wethers, heavy, 4%d to 4%d per lb.; ewes, 3%d to 4 J Ad per lb.; lamb, right, to 7%d per lb. ; lamb, heavy, 6%d to 7d per lb.; ox hinds, 5d to 5%d per lb. ; ox fores. 3’4d to 3%d per lb. ; cow ; hinds, 3%d to 4*4d per lb.; cow fores, 2%d to 3d per lb.
