ASCENT OF EGMONT.

TRIP FROM INGLEWOOD. The first ascent to the summit of the mountain from the North Mountain House for this season, was made by a party from Inglewood. On Sunday morning Guide Haldane, accompanied by Miss Haldane and Messrs. Bilton, Burgess and Starkey and another, of Inglewood, and Mr. Mallis, of Nyassaland, Africa, a visitor to New Zealand, started from the hostelry at 8.30 a.im., reacting the summit at 11.30 a_m. They had a magnificent view. They say they were able to see the Kaikoura mountains in the South Island, as well as the marvellous outlook over the North Island, so glorious as to repay them for their arduous climb. And arduous it was, for they had to use the ice axe for the last fifty feet. Guide Haldane explained that it would have been harder still had it not been for the fail of snow which took place in the early part of last week. They left the summit again at 12.30 p.m., and by about 2 o’clock were back once more at the hostelry. All the participants In the venture, though perhaps not. anxious to start again on such a trip ionmediatjly, arc unantmous in their declaration that they Wunid not have missed such a thrilling experience, and are warm in their eulogies of Guide Haldane’s care, skill and capability.
