Crs. R. H. Cameron,- S. Ward, A. Stewart, \V. Mclnnes, C. Jackson, T. Lawson. S. B. Hunter, C. B. Walsh and E. S. Rutherfurd. The recommendation of the general purposes committee that the application of a number of shopkeepers that they be allowed to decorate their shops with evergreens on Christmas Eve be granted, came up. The Mayor moved, that the recommendation of the works committee be deleted from the minutes. Cr. Ward seconded. Cr. Jackson emphatically disagreed with the mot ion_ The motion was lost, and the committee's recommendation adopted. The matter of cleaning up the streets during the Christmas week was left in the hands of Cr. Jackson. The report of the housing committee, which was held over at the meeting of the general purposes committee, Was adopted, and the following letter from two of the householders was received: — “At the last meeting of the Stratford Borough Council, when the report of the housing committee was under discussion, Councillor Ward ventilated what he considered a grievance, and our thanks are due to him for the same. An impression seems to be abroad in some quarters that Councillor Ward acted without our consent of approval. This is entirely as the matter was fully discussed with Cr. Ward and other councillors with a view to fuller discussion at the council table. Trusting this may remove any misconception by members of the council as to Councillor Ward’s authority’ to speak.—Th os Aylward, Geo, Davidson.” Cr. Lawson moved as a recommendation to the committee that tenders be called for each of the three other houses. The Mayor said that the housing committee had done better than could be done by tender. had eliminated builder's profit. He was quite satisfied in his own mind that they had done better than could be done under any other provision. It was no use asking the committee to call for tenders, because they could not do it. Mr. Healey had been told that if he could build houses at a certain price he would get further jobs, and he was not going to go behind that. If prices had come down, as some people said they would get the benefit of the reduction.
The motion lapsed, and the report was adopted. Cr. Jackson, chairman of the works committee, stated that a satisfactory man had been secured as dustman. After discussion, it was decided that the matter of appointing a permanent rubbish collector be left in the hands of the works committee, with power to act. The Mayor moved that the council authorise every precaution to meet the position in regard to the combatting of the bubonic plague. Cr. Ward said that he thought, in this connection, that ‘it was a necessity that the yards in Broadway should be cleaned out. He had seen five rats come from a stable close to Broadway and run over to an adjacent shop. The Mayor said if the resolution were passed it would give the-Council power to act in this connection.—The motion was carried. It was decided that the registration fee for dogs for the following year should be 2/6 for sheep dogs and 10/- for other dogs. Accounts amounting to £895 10s Id were passed for payment. At the conclusion of the meeting the Mayor wished councillors, the council staff, and the Press' the compliments of the season, and expressed a hope for more prosperous times in the New Year. Cr. Jackson wished the Mayor and Mrs. McMillan the compliments of the season. GENERAL Prior to Nurse Rae’s departure for Hawke’s Bay. her many friends gathered at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Fowler, Broadway, to bid her farewell. A very enjoyable time was spent, and much regret was expressed at her departure.
Arrangements for the big swimming carnival which the Stratford Club is to hold on January 12 are now well in hand. The club is building a new dressing shed and is making several improvements. There will be increased seating accommodation for the carnival, which should be well worth seeing. The meeting is to be held both in rhe afternoon and evening and, in all, there are 32 events to be decided. Big entries are expected, and it is hoped that the ladies will rally round and justify the club’s action in putting on seven events for ladies and girls. Entries close on January 9at 8 p.m. with either Mr. Gaffaney, Mr. Gaylard or Mr. C. Rowson. No late entries will be accepted. After its ordinary meeting last night the Stratford Borough Council sat as the Domain Board, and it was decided to meet again early in the New Year to go into the matter of improving the King Edward Park reserve and improving Victoria Park for football and cricket. Reference was made by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) to the good work of Mr. P. Thomson in connection with the domains, and it was decided to ask him to act as an honorary member of the Domain Board. Messrs. *D. J. Malone and Co., wholesale wine and spirit merchants, Stratford, have an advertisement in this issue regarding Christmas hampers that will repay inspection.
