TO COMBAT PLAGUE.
POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND. VALUE OF DESTROYING RATS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House this afternoon the Minister- of Health (the Hon. C. J. Parr) made a statement regarding the steps being taken to combat the spread of plague. He had been asked, he said, to have the luggage of all passengers arriving •from infected ports fumigated at the wharves, but his expert officers are of opiniorf that this step is not necessary, and it would be a great inconvenience to the public. Effective steps were to be taken, and one was the fumigation of every ship before it left Australia, and he was assured the Government of Australia was taking drastic steps to that end. On this matter he had a complete report from Mr. Blow, the New Zealand Government’s agent at!* Sydney. With regard to precautions within New Zealand, the Minister urged that steps to destroy rodents be not relax■ed during the holidays, as one plague infected rat landing in New Zealand, might have most disastrous results. The danger was serious and imminent.
