As the result of keen competition at the opening Hull wool sale, practically the whole offering at the first session was sold. Merinos advanced 5 per cent., fine crossbreds 10 to, 15 per cent., mediums 10 per cent., low grades 5 per cent., over the last London sales. EFFECT OF SYDNEY FIRE. London, Dec. 16. The Yorkshire Observer, while regretting the destruction of wool in the Sydney fire, says: “Though the world as a whole could do with this new clip wool, despite B.A.W.R.A.’s surplus, it is a flight of imagination to suggest that the fire is likely appreciably to affect prices. It has not, and could not affect Bradford.” The writer points out that the wool- destroyed, if all merino, only amounts to onefifth of tbe extra merino contained in the new clip, compared with last, year’s.
