TROUBLE WITH FIREMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Dec. 17. The steamer Mataram, which was to sail to-day for Rabaul, has been laid up indefinitely owing to the demand of the firemen for three extra trimmers. The company replied that there were already more men in the stokehold than were required by the Navigation Act. It would choose drastic action rather than tolerate job control. ANOTHER SHIP INVOLVED. THREAT TO THE SERVICE. Received Dec. 18, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 18. The trouble over the manning of the stokehold of the steamer Mataram has extended to the Mukanbo. due ,to sail yesterday for the New Hebrides. Aftei medical examination in Watson’s Bay the skipper signalled that the firemen had refused to sail. The action surprised the company’s officials, who ha< no idea of’ trouble on the vessel. Grav< fears are expressed that it will not b» long before all the steamers in the isjanc service will be declared black.
