PROTECTION OF CHILDREN.

(To the Editor.) Sir; —In the near future it will not be safe for babies and young maidens to tread the flowery footpaths of New Plymouth, and as their homes will in future be occupied by boggles who are under the strong protection of spirits, where will they wander? As regards this recent trial the older girl, strong and lively, escaped to her mother, and after a prolonged cry was able to return to the two small children in her charge, In hopes that her father had returned from his work. Such was the ease, and the lately condemned man received a British flogging which should have been followed later by repeated flogg'ngs. That unan was not demented with drink, for he spoke guardedly to the police and airo walked to the police station. As regards the toddling infant, the mother is declaring that it is suffering from prolonged retention of the urine and cries by the hour, but seems reluctant to consult another physician, probably through poverty.—l am, etc., DUTY.
