WEST END SCHOOL
END OF THE YEAR’S WORK. PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY. There was a large crowd of pupils and many parents and friends at the West End gymnasium last night, when the prizegiving ceremony in connection with the West End School took place. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P., and P. J. White (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board). The prizes in the infants’ classes were presented yesterday afternoon by Mrs.". Medley.
The chairman of the school committee (Mr. J. S. S. Medley), after extending a welcome to the gathering, proceeded to review affairs in connection with the school. He said they had had a very successful year, and the attendance had increased considerably. The committee had also done a hard year’s work, and a good deal of credit was due to Mr. W. H. Broome, who had succeeded to the secretaryship. Mr. Medley remarked on fhe success of the school concert, and he hoped that a function on similar lines might be arranged next year. The gala day and carnival queen had been responsible for adding considerably to the funds of the committee. The inspectors’ report on the school was splendid, Mr. Medley said, and he thought they could congratulate themselves on the fact that the school had made wonderful progress. The sixth standard had done particularly well, and out of the 48 pupils 46 gained proficiency certificates and two competency, there being no failures. The success was principally due to Mr. Rountree, who was in charge of the class, and he was deserving of hearty congratulations. The committee’s thanks were due to Mr. Evans, the headmaster, for his work in the interests of the school, and also to the other teachers. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The report presented by the headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans) referred to changes which had taken place ’in the staff, and said: “Owing to frequent changes in the staffing the usual standard of attainment was not maintained; nevertheless, the school inspectors have given a very favorable report on the work of the school as a whole. The roll number at the commencement of the year was 523, and it new is 592, the highest number during the year being 597. During the year the school has advanced from grade 6b to 7a, and will be graded 7b from the commencement of next year. Owing to reasons previously stated the percentage of promotions is not quite so high as that of iast year. However, we have arranged to promote certain pupils on trial, and by hard work on their part, and with the co-operation of the parents, we hope to see them attain greater success next year. “In swimming our pupils were successful in winning the Weston and McHardy Shields. In addition to this, 67 pupils gained swimming certificates. In football both the senior and junior teams were runners-up for the competitions in North Taranaki. Five boys were selected to represent North Taranaki against South Taranaki. In hockey our girls were placed third in the competitions, they being the only primary school represented in the North Taranaki competitions. The first round of competitions has been concluded, our boys winning four out of five matches played. “I feel that I cannot adequately express my gratitude to the staff for their strict | attention to duty, their hearty co-opera-lion, their courtesy, their efficiency, and their zeal during a year of greater trials and difficulties than I have pAviously experienced.”
Thanks were also expressed to the board, the inspectors, school committee, etc. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. #ilson) addressed some appropriate remarks to the children and congratulated standard 6 on their record, which, he thought, could hardly be beaten. He urged the scholars to take full advantage of their proficiency certificates. The presentation of prizes took phace during the evening, the list being as follows: INFANT CLASSES.
