The architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) reported as follows: New work, Stratford Technical High Sciio)! (contract). —I am pleased -to be able to re-

port that, this work is about completed. I wish to give Mr. Sandford credit for the painstakihg and conscientious way he has carried out the duties of clerk of works. Repair work and general.—The following work has been completed: General and painting repairs to the Opunake residence, painting repairs Ngaere school, painting repairs Pungarehu school and Okato, and painting repairs are also receiving attention at Warea. An extra tank has been erected at the Finnerty school, and a partition removed at Kaponga, as requested. The whole of the outside staff, except two men, are engaged on the office additions. The science master at the Hawera Techn'.cil High - School has forwarded plans of the layout -ns suggested by him and to his requirements. I have gone into the matter, a:.d with the exception of the proposed dark room can see no objections to carrying out the work accordingly, as the cost will probably be within the grant. The only is that every science master appointed requires something different; however, we shall probably have the work all completed before any change takes place. In regard to turning the instructor’s room into a dark room for blue printing and photographic work, a special grant will have to bo applied for. Twenty pounds should cover the cost of fitting this room up. The officer in charge of school buildings (Mr. W. two members of the committee, and inspected the hall in which the school is now held, and regretted to have to repeal that the roil number had fallen toi 37. The hall required partial lining-, and they suggested that some arrangement might be made with the board by which it might be done. A stove wou’.d be required before the winter, and Mr. Moore thought that this might be put in so as to be movable. As the hall was situated only > a little orer two miles from the Hawera ■ school, and although perhaps convenient for the children: now resident, it would appear that a better position for a permanent' school would be some further distance along the ManawapoU Road. Under the circumstances, and bearing in mind the unwillingness of the department to building schools at the present time, they decided that it would be better not to make further inquiries with regard to the purchase of land at present.—Approved. GLEN ROAD SCHOOL. In connection with the proposal to estabitfh a school at Glen Road, Mr. J. A. Valentin* (senior inspector), reported teat he did nu; think it advisable to build a grade 3a scacal such as the one established at Glen Road would certainly be, as a movable school, if a school was to be of grade 3a, it should be in a permanent building. He did not chhik that at present the department would make a grant to cover the cost of such a structure, and he was afraid that the residents of this road must for a. while longer put up with the inconvenience of distance to existing schools. It was not as if their children were debarred altogether from attending school, and the roads were of the best. The chairman said that they would have to accept the report, but he considered it should have been possible to build a movable sch jo’, as at present there were a number of children in that district not receiving any education. He certainly agreed that a 3a school should be a permanent structure. Mr. A. Lees considered that if the department were not prepared to erect a school there they should find some method of getting the children to one of the existing schools. At present only 23 children out o* 43 were receiving education. He pointed out that previously the children were being conveyed to school, the parents paying a portion

of the cost, but he did not see why the parents should be penalised in this way. It was resolved that Messrs. Lees and Eaves be appointed to confer with the Manala School Committee with the object of calling tenders for the conveyance of school children from Glen Road and* Inaha .to Manaia school, and submit tenders to the next meeting of the board. GENERAL. The Okaiawa School Committee was granted permission to place an honors memorial board in the school. The Waitara School Committee wrote re repairs required at the residence and school. —Referred to the architect. Application is to he made to the department for a grant for a school at Waikirl along the lines indicated by rhe chief inspector. The settlers at Tuhua. are to be informed that if they are willing to erect a building the board will apply to the department tor rent grant. Application for the establishment of a school on the Oj>ua Road was referred to the senior inspector for a, report. The Matiere School Committee’s appllca’ion for a grant of £2O to cover cost of carting shingle was granted. The Arawhata Committee applied for a grant towards cost of hedge trees.—The board regrets that the request cannot be granwa. Application by the Tokaora Committee for improved drainage was referred to the architect. The teacher at Fraser Road wrote re the erection of a shelter shed.—Messrs. Lees and Eaves were appointed a committee to report on the conditions at the school generally. The architect was given power to act In regard to an application from the Moknla Committee for sundr.t repairs. The action of the chairman in calling applications to fill the position of secretary to the board was confirmed. A committee comprising Messrs. Trimble, Lees, and the chairman was set up to go through the applications and make a selection to place before a special meeting of the board, to be held at 10.30 a.m. on January ’ 5.
