A ‘BID FOR MARTYRDOM. WOMEN INTERVENE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Dee. 14. The Government, having failed in it? efforts to secure a candidate for the much-hawked Speakership of the Assembly, the women took a hand in the matter. A deputation of 18 waited on Dr. Arthur (Nationalist), a supporter of motherhood endowment, and asked him to sacrifice himself to secure the passing of the Endowment Bill, and incidentally thereby save the Government from defeat. Dr. Arthur declined martyrdom, nol only because he considered the prospects of the Bill were not bright, but because they were asking him to sink his principles and consign himself to political contempt and oblivion to save a Government which was the most reckless, irresponsible, and dangerous there had ever 'been in New South Wales. NO SOLUTION YET. Received Dec. 14, 9.40 p.m. Sydney, Dec. Mr. Fuller called on the Governor, but refused to make a statement. The Progressive Party held two meetings without arriving at a decision respecting their attitude in the event of Mr. Fuller being commissioned to form a Cabinet. The Assembly met and immediately adjourned until to-morrow.— Cable Assn.
