The Duke of Northumberland, speaking at Berwick, predicted that an Irish settlement would be followed by similar demands from Egypt and India, and the Empire would be disrupted. He believed reaction shortly would be inevitable, when the nation would demand that the Conservative party should extricate it from the dangerous position created by the political opportunism of the last few years.
