MAIN TRUNK SLIP.
ENGINE AND TRUCKS DERAILED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Conyrigtt. Taumarunui, Dec. 13. The slow train which arrived at Taumarunui from Frankton at 8.30 o’clock ran into a slip of earth a mile and a half north of Taumarunui this morning. The passengers state that the train had just turned the bend when the engine ran into the slip, the engine and four trucks being derailed. The truck nearest the engine stood up on end overhanging the engine, three empty cattle trucks following smashed to pieces and several other trucks were damaged. The passenger carriage fortunately was right at the end of a long train and passengers escaped with a severe shaking. The driver and fireman are uninjured, but the engine was damaged and the boiler punctured. Passengers numbering about 30 walked into Taumarunui. The north bound express which leaves Taumarunui at 8 o’clock passed the scene if the dip 20 minutes before and probably the vibration from this train caused the rain-soaked earth to give way. A repair train has gone out to the scene of the landilide from Taumarunui.
