NEARLY A DISASTER.

SCOTTISH TRAIN’S ESCAPE. TAMPERING WITH THE SYSTEM. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —dopy right. Received Dec. 12, 7.25 p.m. London, Dec. 12. An attempt to -wreck a passenger train on the North British Railway between Edinburgh and Musselburgh caused a widespread sensation in Scotland, where it is believed to be a case of political sabotage. The, signalman tried to open the level crossing gates to permit the passage of an approaching train, but found them jammed. They discovered buckets had been placed in such a position as to prevent the opening of the gates, which were only thirty feet from a bridge over the River Esk. The men worked frantically but vainly to remove the obstacles, and the train dashed through, fortunately keeping to the rails and escaping a grave catastrophe.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
