WEST END CARNIVAL QUEEN.
WON BY W'ESTOWN CANDIDATE. The interest that has been taken in the Carnival Queen election. in aid of the West End School, during the last few weeks culminated yesterday, which was the closing day. The position the’ previous day was that Kawaroa was 34-SO, Westown 3230, Devon Street 3168, Breakwater 2364. The morning’s tally of the votes brought in showed a considerable change, and the excitement grew as the board showed that the Westown candidate had again assumed the lead with 5793 votes, .Kawaroa being next with 4096 Devon Street 3646 and Breakwater 3539. It was I rumored that each candidate was holding considerable votes in hand for the last considewible votes in hand for the last moment, and as neither candidate’s supporter could estimate the strength of the other’s reserve, the interest was maintained right to the close of the poll at 3 j).m. Prior to this it was rumored that large numbers of votes had been put in for the various candidates, and the final count proved this to be the case with the majority. The final result showed the position to be as follows: Wqstown (M. Garcia) 13,509 Breakwater (H. Koti) 6,028 Kawaroa (G. Hill) 6 0-16 Devon Street (J. Smart) 3,638 All concerned are to be congratulated on the success of the carnival, which has resulted in the sum of £l2l 12s 7d being raised. A pleasing feature was the fine spirit shown by all the contestants.
