WAITARA.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Dec. 8. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night was presided over by Mr. H. E. Vaughan. There was a good attendance. Mr. Vaughan submitted a map which he had made in respect to the river erosion below Mrs. Woods’ property, showing that considerable encroachment had been made. Mr. Vaughan considered the matter should receive serious attention, and that influence should be brought to bear on the local bodies. The Government engineer estimated the cost of protective works at £4OOO. It was resolved that the Harbor Board and Borough Council be waited on in connection with the matter. In connection with heavy sorting charges on goods landed at the breakwater, letters had been w.'.tten to the Minister and Mr. Jennings, M.P., on the subject. A letter was read from the Prime Minister respecting the treatment of Taranaki ironsand at Darlington, England, Mr. Massey slating that a report would be received shortly from an expert acting on behalf of the Government. The hope was expressed that when Messrs. Summerson’s representative came to New Zealand the possibilities of the Mokau power scheme would be placed before him. The secretary read correspondence forwarded to Levin and Co. respecting direct shipping between Wellington and Waitora. Owing to the few justices of the peace available in Waitara it was resolved to make recommendations to the Justice Department for further appointments. The president made an appeal for more members, and on Mr. Marlow’s suggestion
