DUTY ON BANANAS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, Dec. 7. Amongst the Senate’s amendments to the tariff which the House of Representatives refused to accept was a reduction on the duty ou bananas from one penny to a halfpenny per pound. CAMPAIGN AGAINST HOOKWORM. Melbourne, Dec. 7. The Federal Government has decided to extend the campaign, now being successfully conducted in Australia, to the mandated territory of New Guinea, where it is proposed to treat 200,000 native sufferers. SALARIES OF FEDERAL MEMBERS. Melbourne, Dec. 7. Mr. Hughes promised Dr. Earl Page, leader of the Country Party, an opportunity on Friday of moving a reduction of members’ salaries from £lOOO 40 £BOO. ANTI DUMPING BILL. Melbourne, Dec. 7. In the House of Representatives Mr. Massey Greene is sponsoring the AntiDumping Bill which has been postponed for several months. He stated that the resolution previously recommended an additional duty on goods sold at less than a reasonable price in the country of export. A reasonable price was defined as the cost of production plus 20 per cent., plus ,f.o.b. charges. It had now been ascertained that the cost of production included overhead charges, hence he recommended a reduction of the 20 per cent, to 5 per cent. The amendment was adopted.
FATAL MINING ACCIDENT. Perth, Dec. 6. Four men were instantly killed at the Golden Horseshoe Mine, Kalgoorlie, through the cage falling 600 feet, and three were seriously injured. The cage was being lowered with seven men when a rod on the brake of the winding engine broke. John Nolan (aged 30), Leslie Knox (21), Charles Orsuetti (29), and John. Perich (20) were dead when removed from the cage. Two others are in a critical condition. MOTHERHOOD ENDOWMENT. Sydney, Dec. 6. The Legislative Council carried the second reading of the Motherhood Endowment Bill by 33 votes to I§. THE BADAK MINE. Brisbane. Dec. 6. T. W. Orton, of Melbourne, has been arrested in connection with the Bfidak case. He possessed banknotes to the value of £ll,OOO, and remarked: “This is all I have.” He was remanded on the bail of £lOOO.
