MAORI PLOUGHING ON THE PLAINS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In the article by “Juvenis,” in Saturday’s issue, I notice a .mistake was made by him in stating that in July, 1879, the Maoris did ploughing on old Mr. Hastle's farm. The ploughing on that date was on Mr. LivingStone'S farm at Tokaora, on the Hawera side of the Walngongoro (not far from Inaha). The Waimate Plains was being surveyed then, the first sale taking place In October, 1880. It was in 1885 or 1956, as far as I can remember, when the ploughing took place on Mr. Hastie’s, and Titokowara was the ringleader then. It was through Mr. Livingstone's tact, 1 believe, that bloodshed was averted in both- these cases. Regarding the capture of Te Whiti and Tohu, it should have been done at an earlier date, but Sir Arthur Gordon, who was then Governor, would not give Mr. John Bryce leave to do so. However, he took a holiday to Fiji, and Mr. Bryce got leave .from Sir James Prendergast, who was acting Governor. It was a piece of work, well - planned and carried out.—l am. etc., GEO. J. MACKIE.
