(By “Moturoa.”) While at Feilding ••Moturoa’’ gleaned that Gloaming would —after racing at Ellerslie—be "sent on to New Plymouth to do the Tara-naki-Egxnont circuit. The presence of this great horse will invest the February carnival with considerable Interest. A friend who returned from Australia on the same boat that carried the Greenwood team showed me a "snap” he took of the four in their stalls. Cupidon, Coniston and Veil were standing in the usual cramped spaces allowed horses on the Sydney boats, while Gloaming luxuriated in a stall big enough to repose in with comfort. Por-sibly this was accounted for by Gloaming’s illness, but then again it may mean that Mason thinks more of the champion than he does of the rest of ’em combined I When Loyal Arch won the Kawau Hurdles at Takapuna she tad a ton of luck. Hyginas, a hot favorite, fell at the first obstacle, and the next accounted for Tenacious. Paonui and Killard led to the last fence. Loyal Arch being about 100 yards behind. Paonui blundered on landing, and Killard turned turtle, leaving the way clear for Loyal Arch to score her first victory in two years. Such is the uncertainty of racing.
Mr. G. D. Greenwood, when at Feilding. made no secret of the fact that he expected Pluto to run well in the next Auckland Cup, in which the Sutala gelding has the handyweight of 7.7. The stable has another string in Egotism 6.10, but the gelding may be the better stayer of the two, though both will have to improve a lot before his nibs will back them. Gloaming’s record to date reads : —3B starts, 32 firsts. 3 seconds, and once unplaced—when he fell. It. Mason has kept the champion in great fettle. In fact the horse was never I better than at present Mason has been wonderfully successful with Mr. Greenwood’s horses. During the few years he has trained for the Canterbury sportsman they have won close on £lOO,OOO In stakes. The disappointing Right and Left pulled up very lame after contesting the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna last week, and will require a long spell. An Auckland scribe reports that ".Tigger” Brown has engaged a box at W. Irwin's, Ellerslie, in which case Rational may be a runner at the A.R.C. summer meeting. Purple Spur prepared backers for his victory in ihe Meth ven Cup by running Royal Mac to a head in the South Canterbury Handicap at Timani. Purple Spur is a three-year-old by Antagonist—Heatherbrae. At the South Canterbury meeting Sir George Clifford also scored wfth Dame Straitlace (Kilbroney —Discipline)* Counterstroke (Antagonist— Countermine). Brave Deed (Antagonist—Gallantry), and Whipping Boy (SanquharCounterfeit) at Timani. Mermin’s two-year-old sister, Zareba. succumbed recently at Tauherenikau. While being exercised she burst a blood vessel, and died a few hours later. This was a bad knock for Mr. Chas. Elgar, who was game enough to give 1000 guineas for her as a yearling. She showed some promise on the tracks too. Old racers, like old soldiers, "never die." Divorce, the veteran Sensation—Countess gelding, who has raced since 1911, is said to be going strongly in view of the West Coast carnival at Christinas time. Chatting with Alf. Tricklebank at Feilding I learned that he is assisting Mr. O. Jefferson with his horses trained privately at Marton. Tl-e veteran trainer Harry Honnor is looking after horses trained on the, same track. Amongst the neddies worked there are Santorini. Regard, Silver Sand and Complimentary. Regard is being jumped, and flics the schooling hurdles nicely. In the north Amythas and Uncle Ned are most discussed in connection with the Auckland Cup, while in the South Island Royal BUT is ft firm favwlte.
arc to the effect that the New Zealand Cup winner is "in the pink.”_ The three-year-old colt Songbird, who won at the South Canterbury meeting, has done a lot of racing this season, having been saddled •up a dozen times for four firsts, two seconds and three thirds. Jockey F. ,E. Jones rode many winners for Sir J Geo. Clifford in by-gone days, and he fluked another ride with the blue and gold chequers at Timaru. Prior to the start for the Maiden Brave Deed bolted into the trees, and her rider, Harold Young, received injuries which prevented him from taking part in the race. This gave Jones the mount on Counterstroke later in the day, and he won. Acceptances for the Dannevirke summer meeting close on Friday, December 9, at 8 p.m.
