SORPLUS MEAT.
QUESTION OF DISPOSAL. ITS USE IN EUROPE. NO DECISION YET. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received Dec. 6, 9.10 p.m. London, Dec. 5. • Tn connection with the proposal for the disposal of the surplus stocks of meat, Agents-General inform the Australian Press Association that it is contemplated to purchase the remaining stocks of beef at its cost to the British, Commonwealth and New Zealand Governments for the purpose of re-selling or donating it to the Russian and .Central Europe relief committees. They have not been able to obtain the accurate amount of old stocks, but they are roughly estimated at 30,000 tons, valued at £750,000. It is understood that Mr. Winston Churchill is of opinion that it will be necessary to obtain Parliamentary sanction unless they could, find a credit vote which would cover relief expenditure. He pointed out that it was difficult to proceed without accurate data in regard to the quantity and cost of the meat which it is proposed to purchase. Sir James Connolly (Western Australia) suggested that the British Government should revert to the war-time practice, when it sold meat on three and six years’ credit. Meanwhile they might pay the present holders in Government bonds. Sir James Allen has not committed himself to the proposals pending the Nev/ Zealand Government sanction. — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. QUANTITY IN LONDON. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Tn the House to-day, Mr. Massey said four days ago there were in London 20,000 tons of old meat, half of which was from New Zealand and half from Australia,, but it all belonged to the Imperial Government. *There was a proposal that this meat should be bought back by the countries affected and sent to the Continent, so a* not to flood the British market. It was a matter for serious consideration, but so far he had not heard anything of Argentine coming into the arrangement, and she was affected as much as any country. Mr. Massey was not able to say how many cases of butter were on hand in London.
