NEW PLYMOUTH STATION. MARSLAND HILL SUGGESTED. The question of the site of the official nfc-teorological station in New Plymouth was again before the Borough Council last night. flripfly, this station. wlih’h provide* valuable rceonls, is without a permanent home. With the departure of Mr. W. W. Smith from Pukekura Park the station was removed from the park, and in its quent for a resting pl£ce Kawaroa’s hospitality was sought, hut Kawaroa has reoaons for not wanting it. Last night the council had the following letter before it from the secretary of the Kawaroa Park Society: “To understand the position it is necessary for me to say that the society in the place were very anxious to assist Mr. Bates (Government meteorologist), and permission was therefore give« for th* erection of the enclosure. As since explained to him, however, it was not thought the enclosure would spoil the landscape as it does, and therefore it is regretted tha.t it is necessary to ask for its removal. Your, council will admit that the society has always placed its responsibilities to the public first, and therefore the various views at the park must be conserved. The society has gone out of its way to assist the department, but as the situation of the enclosure is generally admitted, from an aesthetic point of view, to be discordant to the beautiful view at the park, we trust that a position may .be found elsewhere for it. It is regretted the society cannot agree to cut down any trees at the park.” The Mayor thought the ideal site for the observatory was Maryland Hill, which is open to all weather conditions. Councillors agreed with the view, and it was decided to write to the Government meteorologist granting permission to erect the observatory on Marsland Hill, provided it was suitably closed in.
