SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

HAWERA RESIDENT INJURED. A most regrettable accident occurred at Hawcra on Saturday morning to Mr. C. R. Stannard, secretary of the Egmont A. and P. Associate n, just as the express came in from New Plymouth. It appears that Mr. Stannard was on the northern end of the platform, apparently standing close to the edge, and in some unaccountable way fell oft’ the platform in front of the engine. He wg,s struck by the cowcatcher and carried along a distance of two chains before the engine could be pulled up. It was at once seen that he was severely hurt, one leg being badly smashed, while his head and shoulder were lacerated. Willing hands helped to take him up, and under Mr. Rodie’s (the stationmaster) direction, a railway stretcher was procured, and the injured man carried out. Medical aid was summoned, but unfortunately no ’doctor could at the time be secured. A message was at once sent for the ambulance, and the sufferer was taken to the hospital. The sincerest regret will be felt by many friends at the serious accident to a wellknown resident.
