NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS.
MEETING OF TARANAKI BRANCH. A meeting of the executive committee was held in the Egmont Chambers, Stratford, on Friday, 2nd inst., there being present Messrs. H. Baily, V. Duff, F. T. Davis, C. H. Wynyard. B. Andrews (New Plymouth), W. Power (Stratford). Mr. F. T. Davis was elected chairman of the executive committee for the ensuing year. It was reserved that steps be instituted to promote a Taranaki Provincial Students Society, and to give effect to the resolution the members present were appointed a provisional executive committee. The executive committee will formulate rules to put the resolution into operation.
A letter was received from the Hawera Students’ Society seeking information in connection with grants made by the society for the purpose of establlishing a library, Mr. Baily, Taranaki delegate to the society, intimating that the council, at the next meeting, would be giving consideration to the question of establishing libraries in country towns, but at the present time they were opposed to the principle of establishing numerous libraries, the present policy being to establish a library in the provincial town, and thereafter extend their efforts by way of improving the established library, Mr. Baily also pointed out that the books in New Plymouth could be acquired on loan, by any member of the society, and would be posted to them on application. It was resolved that the secretary reply to the correspondence conveying the information and also that the Hawera Students’ Society be asked to affiliate with the Taranaki Accountants’ Students’ Society. Under the auspices of the Taranaki branch a general meeting was convened for 8 p.m. Mr. J. B. Richards presided over a good attendance. An address was delivered by Mr. F. T. Davis, accountant to Messrs, Roy and Nicholson, on the subject of “Law of Contracts,” Mr. Davis confining his address to the elementary principle of that law as affecting every day business. On concluding Mr. Davis very ably disposed of the questions asked, and was accorded a very hearty vote of appreciation. The' matter of forming a Taranaki Provincial Students’ Society was explained to the general meeting, and the principle of forming such a society was unanimously affirmed. Persons desirous of joining were invited to communicate with Mr. W. Power or any membei of the committee.
