A YOUNG GIRL THIEF.
CAUGHT RIFLING A DESK. A girl of 154 years of age, appeared in the Juvenile Court at Wellington on Saturday morning to answer to three charges of theft. She pleaded guilty. It was stated that a lady at the Lower Hutt, prior to going into her bedroom to dress for the street, locked the doors and put a note out for the baker. While she was dressing she heard a noise, and on investigating discovered the accused getting in through a window. She kept watch and saw the girl get into the room and open a desk. When the intruder was accosted she said she had made a mistake; she thought she was in a girl friend’s house. She gave a false name and address. Subsequently she was seen by a detective. Two wristlet watches were found in her possession, and these she admitted she had stolen. It was atso stated that on one occasion when returning home by train she found a parcel in the railway carriage containing blouses and a pair of stockings, which she appropriated. The chief detectitve explained that the girl’s parents were decent working people, but suffered from physical disabilities, which enabled the girl to do 1 pretty much as she liked. She was out jat service, and the report was that she i was given to staying out la,te at night, lie suggested that the girl should be ; placed in the care of the Salvation Army for a period of two years. The magistrate agreed to adopt this course, and the girl was handed over (<> Mr< clover, of the Salvation Army, present in court.
