MANAIA.

TOWN BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) December 2. The Manaia Town Board held its monthly meeting on Thursday evening. Present: Mr. J. G. Craig (chairman) and Crs. J. J. Meldon, G. H. Edwards, J. Hickey, and LG. Nielson. An apology for absence was received from Cr. N. C. Innes. A letter, in which he tendered his resignation from the board, was received from Cr. A. H. Christie, who wro.e: “My reason for doing so is as a protest against the extravagant way the ratepayers’ money has been wasted over the women’s rest., and which has been confirmed by the majority of the members of the -board, and which, in my opinion, was quite unnecessary.” The chairman moved, and Cr. Meldon seconded, that the resignation be accepted with regret. Cr. Hickey said that the board would be sorry to lose the services of Mr. Christie, whose experience of finance would have proved valuable at such a time as this, when they were about to spend a large amount of money on a water and drainage scheme. The motion was carried. On the motion of Cr. Edwards, seconded by Cr. Meldon. it was resolved that nominations to-fill the vacancy e’ose on Wednesday, December 14, and that the the election, if any, be held on December 21. The superintendent of State Advances wrote acknowledging receipt of the board’s application for the issue of debentures Nos. 2 and 3, of £lOOO each, on account of the water and drainage scheme, and stating that if the board would advise him when a payment had to be made for the pipes which it was proposed to order, he would remit the sum required. The chairman said he would probably interview the department early in the New Year. Nothing further could be done now until the exact pipe-line was ascertained, and the area defined. It was resolved that the board’s office be closed for a fortnight as from the evening of Friday, December 23, and that the next meeting of the board be held on January 12. Permission was granted to the Ladies’ Patriotic -Society to erect a stall in Main Street, and to make a street collection, in aid of t'he soldiers’ Christmas hospital fund, on Tuesday next. A subsidy of £2O for the year was voted to the fire brigade, and a similar sum to the library committee, in addition to £l5. for repairs. The question of erecting a new fence at the cemetery was referred to the cemetery committee. Building permits were granted for a house in Ngatai Street, and for an addition to another house , the total cost being £975. Cr. Nielson reported as to the furniture required for the women's rest. The ehairman suggested that the Ladies’ Patriotic Society be asked if they would supervise the institution. Cr. Hickey asked if there would be an official opening. The chairman said he thought it would be best to go on witlh the furnishing, and when this was completed, make it known that the building was open. The official opening could be held when the band rotunda was opened —probably next March. He would interview the Ladies’ Patriotic Society relative to their superintending the rest. The committee appointed to furnish the building was authorised to expend up to £2O for this purpose.
