WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Dec. 1. A sale of work and Christmas tree is to be held in St. John’s Hall in aid of the church funds. A splendid assortment of goods and produce are coming in. Mr. J. W- Laing, who was coach in previous years to the Royal Life-Saving team, is to be asked again to take up the duties and coach a team for the Tabor Shield competition, which is to be held in New Plymouth in February. Mr. A. Pizzey has promised to assist in the coaching. The Mayor has promised £1 towards the prize list in connection with the beach picnic on New Year’s Day. The steamer Hula is to pay us a visit, bringing 100 tons of Waikato coal for Messrs. Borthwick and Sons. An executive meeting of the Waitara Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday evening, when matters were discussed to b,e placed before the general meeting. It was decided to gather all possible information relative to a direct steamer between here and Wellington. The general manager of rail- ■ wavs is to be written to relative to the heavy sorting charges from the New Plymouth breakwater and delay in dispatch of goods after arrival by steamer. A retailers’ meeting! is being called on the question of the half-holiday, and it is expected petitions will he circularised for reverting back to Thursday.
