TURF TOPICS.

(By "Moturoa”.) Concluding day at Takaputaa to-day. Feildlng to-day and to-morrow. Kyoto is due at any moment now. Cochineal should show up at Fellding. A small bird chirps that Erie is very fast. I’avo was unlucky on Saturday, but should win soon. Bonnetter and Affectation will be hard to beat in the big race at Feildlng. ; There ought to be good money waiting for Awake at FeildFig. If Celmisla starts in the open Flying she will carry the office boy’s "dollar”. The straight tip I Winners will be hard to get on to at Feilding to-day, but things may be easier to-morrow. The Gisborne-bred gelding Over There, by Gazeley—Pauleen, won a race in Westrulia recently. Uncle Alex has gone up lOlbs to-day, but is only meeting Refinement on 81b worse terms. The result may be the same again. They say that the chief racecourse 'tec receives £750 a year—£loo more than the Commissioner of Police. Some billet, eh ? Athens II is reported to be a fine fencer, but considering that he did not win a race last year he is hardly entitled to 10.1 at Feilding. If Starland could be induced to do his best the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna would only be a jog for him, but the punters may prefer consistent horses like Stork and Insurrection. Considerable rain fell at Feilding on Saturday, and a drizzle bn Monday night and on Tuesday, so the going is likely to be very sticky there to-day. Hyginas made a big effort to win the Tiri Hurdles at Takapuna under 12.2, beating all but Killard, who was in receipt of 341bs. Today there is only 241bs - between them, which should assist Hyginas, but Snake may finish in front of the pair. The principal open events at Feilding are very open, at least five horses in the St. Andrew’s Handicap and six in the Flying being whispered as “certainties”. Possibly Pluto and Dainty Step will carry big money on the "separator”. Mason has Gloaming and Pluto at Feilding, but it is still doubtful whether the cbimpion will be slipped in the weight-for-age races there, or will be reserved for Ellerslie. One thing is certain; if Mason sets Gloaming to take on Rational he will take all manner of beating. The many friends of "Charlie” Jenkins, one of the greatest jockeys that ever threw a leg over a saddle in New Zealand, will be~-pleased to hear that the old-time horseman Is in the pink of condition, and regularly exercises horses on the Bulls tracks. “Charlie” appears to have lost none of his ability in the saddle, and everything points to him "coming back” in real earnest. The New Zealand Cup winner Royal Star is getting through great work at Riccarton, and he is expected to be amongst the runners in the Auckland Cup. As a rule the winner of the big race at Christchurch is too well cared for by the northern handicapper, but Lochiel, St. Hippo and Warstep won both events. The disappointing and much-raced Crowhurst made good in a minor hurdle race at Takapuna on Saturday, and now that he has taken a liking to timber-topping, a horse with ills pace should go far, in hack company at least.. He has only gone up llibs tor his win on Saturday. A Sydney writer, with a taste for has worked out that Mr. E. J. Watt’s horses have won stakes to the tune 0“ £44,198 during the last ten years. The figures eclipse the winnings of leading Australian owners, principal of which were Mr. P. A. Connolly £32,286, and Mr. S. A. Rawdon £25,555. Commenting on the remarkable fact that a New Zealand Cup winner has never sired a winner of that race, the Otago Witness states : Some winners of past New Zealand Cups ended ' their careers far away from the scene of their I triumph. Spade Guinea, the winner in 1886, broke a leg whilst running in a Melbourne Cup. Lochiel and Manton, who won in 1887 and 1888 respectively, found their way to Australia, where the former achieved great success as a sire. Tirailleur, who»won in 1889, met with a fatal accident whilst racing in Victoria. St. Hippo, the winner of 1892, went to Queensland, and became burled in obscurity. Waiuku, who won in 1897, afterwards raced in England and was brought back to New Zealand. Seahorse, the winner of 1899, was sent to England, and afterwards ended his career in America. Canteen, who scored in 1903, terminated his career in an outlandish part of Australia; and so did Grand Rapids, who won in 1904. Noctulform, who won after starting one of the hottest favorites ever seen in the race, met with an accident whilst racing over hurdles in England, and that was the end of him. Ardenvhor, who won in 1916, is buried in oblivion in some part of Australia, and Midnight Sun, who scored in 1912, has’ also faded from memory.
