DOCTOR ATTACKED.
A SENSATIONAL INCIDENT. A BURGLAR SURPRISED. By Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. A sensational incident occurred, tonight at the surgery of Dr. P. F. McEvedy, a well-known medico. He was engaged in his surgery at the bottom of the garden, and left temporarily to visit the house before meeting Dr. H. Gilmer, with whom he had to hold, a consultation. Passing dose to the garage he • thought he heard the door close. He immediately flung open one of the garage doors, and received a stunning blow on the head from a sharp instrument, which smashed through his bowler hat and inflicted a deep wound on the left temple. Still retaining nis senses the doctor, who is a well-known athlete, endeavored to dose with his assailant, who evidently wore rubber shoes "rom his soundless movements, but the man escaped. The doctor pursued him, but the intruder scaled the fence, and then coolly sauntered up the road, passing the doctor, who had rushed to the main gate of the grounds. McEvedy shouted to passers-by, who approached the unknown man, but the latter darted away. Finding his passage obstructed by the road being under repair* and a rope stretched across the man dropped his brief bag and vaulted over the obstructions and made good his escape. The police were then •summoned. In the bag was found a five-chambered Smith Webley revolver, fully loaded, and some stamps, evidently taken from the surgery. Dr. MeEvedy’s wound though painful, is not of a serious nature. He describes the man, whom he saw distinctly, as of medium size build, wearing a light fawn raincoat, a low collar, and black tie.
