V.C. FOR INDIAN.
INSPIRING BRAVERY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Nov. 26. Isshar Singh, of the 28th Punjabis, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for valor in Waziristan. In April, 1921, he was severely wounded in the chest, and fell beside a Lewis gun. Hand-to-hand fighting commenced, and all the officers were killed and wounded, and the gun was captured. Issßar got up, and, with two others, charged and recovered the gun, and then got it into action. Later, when ordered into hospital, he? stayed to carry water to the wounded, making innumerable visits to a river, reminiscent of Kipling’s Gunga Din. While a doctor was dressing a wounded man Isshar stood before the doctor, shielding him with his own body from bullets. The official account states that his conduct inspired all who saw him.
