Cr. C. Cumming has resigned his seat on the Eltham Borough Council.

Sir Bassett Edwards, late of the Supreme Court Bench, is on a short visit to New Plymouth.

The death is rehorded in a cable from London of the Rev. J. W. Horsley, vicar of Detling, and hon. canon of Southwark.

A Tokio message says it is reported that Prince Hirohito has been appointed Regent and Count C’hinda named ae adviser.

A Dunedin message reports the death of Air. Charles Darling, formerly cable editor of the Dunedin Evening Star, and for many years secretary of the Otago branch of the Navy League.

Christchurch reports the death of Mr. George L. Stevenson, aged 55, of Stevenson, Stewart and Co., a shipping firm, which owns the bay steamers Cygnet and John Anderson. \ The good feeling existing between the employees of the Kaupokonui stores and the late manager, Mr. A. H. Parkinson, has been given tangible expression by the presentation to the latter of an address and a solid gold albert (reports the Witness).

A London cable says there was a remarkable demonstration outside and inside the Hippodrome when the King and Queen, Princess Mary, Viscount Lascelles, the Queen of Norway, Princess Victoria, the Duke of York and Prince Henry attended a command variety performance in aid of the variety artists’ benevolent fund. It should interest old residents of Souh Taranaki, and those of Okaiawa in particular, to learn that Mr. T. A. Harris, the Mayor-elect of the new borough of Raetihi, formerly occupied the position of master of the Gkaiawa school (says the Witness). Subsequently ho was headmaster of the Motueka District High School; but gave up teaching to enter the legal profession, in which sphere his success has Leon no less marked than that achieved in his former occupation. In public life he has filled every leading position, including Town Board chairmanship, with conspicuous ability. His elevation to the new mayoralty was unopposed.

Airs. Evelyn, one of England’s most successful breeders and exhibitors of perligrec Jersey cattle, is on a visit to New Plymouth, and during her short stay in this district hopes to inspect as many as possible of the Jersey herds for which Taranaki is no noted. Mrs. Evelyn is particularly enthusiastic and has scored many triumphs at the leading shows of England. Her herd comprises upwards of 80 head.
