DOMINION NEWS.

THE TELEPHONE TRICK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Nov. 25. Ida Newman, a young married woman who admitted several charges of obtaining goods by what is known as the telephone trick, this morning pleaded guilty to a further charge. Mr. Poynton, S.M., said: “I am afraid probation is being abused. However, the Supreme Court grants it and I suppose we should follow its direction. The Supreme Court the other day gave probation to a man who stole a large sum of money from his employers, and I think in this case I might stretch a ppint. To imprison the woman might endanger her, so I will put her on probation for-the term, five years.” An order for restitution to the extent of £43 12s 2d was made.
