DANNEVIRKE SUMMER MEETING. ENTRIES TO-NIGHT. Horse-owners and trainers are finally reminded that nominations for all events at the above meeting close to-night at 8 p.m. me programme, which appears in this issue, is a most attractive one, and should draw big entries. The Dannevirke Handicap (Open) is worth 500 BOVS’; the Otanga. Handicap (Open) 300 sovs; and the Oringi Welter Handicap (Open) 250 sovs. Hacks are also well catered for. Mr. J. E. Henrys will attend to the handicapping, and Mr. R. H. Skipworth will preside at the starting barrier. THE TAX AT ELLERSLIE. Tax tax to be paid by the Auckland Racing Club in connection with the recent spring meeting is as follows:

In addition the amount of fractions, which is estimated to be between £6OO and £7OO, has to be paid. Mr. T., 11. Lowry has claimed the following names for his two-year-olds, which so far have not carried silk; —Br. colt by Finland— Aurarius, -half-brother to Desert Gold, Fingoland; bay colt by Finland—D’Oro, the lattsr a. sister to Desert Gold, Moorland; br. colt by Finland—Lapdrail, Finhaven; and bay colt by Finland—Symibolism, Killastandra. From time to time sensational prices have been realised for thoroughbreds in this State (says the Age), but. one of the surprises of recent years was the lively competition enlisted for the three-year-old colt Heir Apparent, winner of the V.R.C. Batman Stakes at Flemington. Starting at 500 guineas. Heir Apparent quickly attracted “nods," which brought bis price up to 3000 guineas, far above rhe most sanguine expectations of his owner, whose only reason for parting with: the colt was that he contemplates a trip to England in the near future. H. W. Torr, trainer < f the colt, was apparently keen on retaining the well-built, son of Comedy King Hind Our Queen, and he want to 3200 guineas, but 3300 guineas was called by Mr. H. A. Armytage, and, amidst applause, he was knocked down at that figure. For Victoria it is a record price at auction for a three-year-old, but in New Zealand the Multifonm—Aura filly Golden Slipper, wiio turned out a. great disappointment, brought 4500 guineas at The dispersal sale of the stud of the late Mr. G. G. Stead in August, 1908. At tke same age Carbine brought 3000 guineas. Dreadnought 2100 guineas, and Singapore 2000 guineas; while Titan, as a two-year-old, w<rs purchased for 4600 guineas. Prior to the sale of Heir Apparent bidding at yesterday’s auction was very dull, but it brightened up subsequently, and the higlrly-bred Ethiopian brought 1700 guineas, having been down to Mr. Percy Miller, of Scone, New South Wales. Ethiopian for a few seasons may join the stud of Mr. J. V. Smith, near Toolainba. A bid for 1300 guineas was refused for the Bright Steel—Red Ink filly Scarlet, who divided Etherian and Ursina in the V.R.C. November Nursery on Melbourne Cup day; while Tragic Star was passed in at 350 guineas, and 600 guineas was declined for Strathredole, and the same figure failed to induce the owner to part with the likelylooking Scouric,. a half-brother to Battlewrack. Boynie B. went to G 25 guineas, but the reserve was 900 guineas.
