MAYOR’S FIGHT WITH NEWSPAPERS.
’ New York, Oct. 1. In leply to Press criticisms of the action of the New York police in suppressing the of the unemployed, the Mayor, Mr. Hylan/ has taken the extraordinary course of issuing "a proclamation to the business men, merchants, and shopkeepers” of tne metropolis, exhorting them to withdraw their advertisements from those newspapers which persistently .attack his administration. The Mayor declares that for political reasons the newspapers are depicting New York as a “paradise for criminals,” thus inviting an influx of thieves and undesirable characters from all parts of the country and frightening away visitors, tourists, shoppers and business men. The newspapers, with the exception of those controlled by Mr. Hearst, publish the Mayor’s proclamation in parellel columns with statistics showing a total of 383 unsolved murders in New York City since Mr. Hylan appointed Mr. Richard E. Enright as Police Commissioner on January 28, 1918. As regards the extent of unemployment, it is pointed out that America has three men out of work to one in Great Britain.
