DAMAGES FOR LIBEL. By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, Nov. 23. Mr. Justice Herdman entered judgment for £225 each in favor of two Syrian brothers, named Azzey, of Warkworth, who obtained a. verdict' against Henry James Hansen .for libel arising from the circulation of defamatory letters. FREEZING WORKS DEADLOCK. Gisborne, Nov. 23. The position in regard to the opening of the freezing works remains unchanged. The men are determined to await the promulgation of the new award before deciding to accept and the freezing companies are watching any developments that will allow them to proceed. Stock in the district is in a forward state and considerable loss will accrue if the opening is long delayed. RED CROSS AMALGAMATION. Wellington, Nov. 23. A meeting of the Dominion Council of the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John resolved to confirm the resolution of the executive of October last regarding amicable co-operation in the peace time activities of the two societies under a joint council, as in the Old Country. Before any agreement is entered into a draft of the same is to be submitted for their approval. * ESCAPEE COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. Taumarunui, Nov. 23 William Arthur Edward Atkinson was charged in Court with having escaped from lawful custody and breakin" and entering the Taumarunui police station and stealing therefrom £5 13s and a service revolver with leather holster, the property of the Government. on November 12. Accused pleaded "uilty to both charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for seni.
