WORKERS’ UNIONS.
SUGGESTED AMALGAMATION. LARGE NUMBERS AFFECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. For some time past negotiations have been under way for the amalgamation of the New Zealand Workers’ (Union and the Alliance of Labor. Tentative proposals forming the basis of the union have been agreed to by the New Zealand Workers’ Union, but up to the present the alliance haa not seen its way clear to ratify the agreement. Mr. J. Roberts, secretary to the alliance, has, however, communicated with Mr. C. Grayndler, secretary to the New Zealand Workers’ Union, stating that the annual meeting of the alliance was thoroughly desirous of an. understanding being arrived at between the two organisations. It is likely further discussions on the matter will take place. The membership of the Alliance of Labor comprises over 40,000 workers and that of the NewZealand Workers’ Union over 16,000. Among the bodies affiliated with the alliance are the Waterside Workers’ Federation, Seamen’s Federations, Miners’ Federation, Tramwaymen’s Federation, Drivers’ Federation, Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, New Zealand Engineering Union and. the Slaughtermen’s Federation. Connected with the New Zealand Workers’ Union,} which is affiliated with the Australasian' Workers’ Union, are the shearers, Manawatu flax workers, threshing mill employees, King Country sawmill workers, Dominion railway construction workers, general laborers of the Auckland industrial district, various other smallei bodies and the agricultural workers.
