(By “Moturoa.”) The South Canterbury Jockey Club meeting opens on Friday. Horses that appear to oe leniently treated there include Mandrake, Almoner, The Reaver and Bon Spec. Acceptances for the Feilding meeting, which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday next, are first class, and amongst those paid up for are over a score of Taranaki horses. Until Wednesday it was over twenty years since the writer attended a race meeting at Ashhurst. Chatting with an old-time horseman I reminded him that ne won on a certain horse at that meeting. “Yes,” he replied with a. laugh “it was the Last race on the card, and was run in the dark. They ran round posts then, and 1 took a short cut hewne ” Slab of evidence in an alleged betting case heard at Palmerston this week; “Witness (a, plain-clothes John) handed Heffernan (the accused) the 10s note, saying, 'Rouen in. tl:e New Zealand Cup.’ Heffernan put it in bis pocket, saying, ’Do you want to have a chance, because there was a chap in here this morning who told me he had a dream last night, and he saw Royal Star winning.’ ” And yet they tell us there are no “sports” in the world! Additional acceptances notified for ire Feilding meeting are: St. Andrew's Handicap, Loveniatch and Egmont Park. Calma, who won the Steeples at Winton on Monday, is an ancient, but consistent Calibre mare. This season she has recorded three firsts and a third in four starts. In New Zealand the paternal Government won’t allow a policeunan's wife to take tn boarders, dr to sell eggs, or otherwise earn a few shillings to augment hubby’s dwindling salary. What would they think of one that owned and raced a horse? Just imagine such a thing as the following happening in this free country: The champion steeplechaser of the year in the U.S.A, is the property of Mrs. Deputy Police Commissioner Loft, whose Sweepment won most of the big prizes for jumpers. Mrs. Loft has refused £7OOO for her horse. On the whole racehorse nomenclature tn ’Stralia is «many miles behind that of New Zealand, but there are a few appropriateiyi named neddles running over there. One is ■ Purser, a big winner at recent Victorian meetings, who is by Sea Prince—Paper Money. Another is Lawnmower, the Queensland Cup and Derby winner, by Flying Ma--1 Waodhiwa. Pfobably «?« bf the
best in recent years was Abdicator, a son ot Prudent King and "Eloping Lady. New Zealand-toted horses that have won tn 'Stralia this month include tie following:— Lapland (Finland —The Hague), who started favorite in, and won the Novice Handicap ar Williamstown z on November 4; Checkmale (Antagonist—Winning Way), who won the November Handicap, one -mile, and a quarter, at Westfern Australia on November 12; and Queen'S Common, by King Rufus—ltos common, whck was first home in the Cessnock J.C. Handicap on November 12. Other winners of interest" to New Zealanders were Wiscmond, by Seremond from the New Zealand-bred mare Wise Bird, by Treadmill—Glenowlet, one ot Sir Geo. Clifford’s breeding. Wisemond won the CliestA’fleld Plate at Brisbane on November 9, and the same day Lickiel Dhu, by Duke Huunphrey from the New Zealand-br?d Lady Lochiel, by Lochiel, scored in the Novice Handicap at the same meeting. Imported stallions continue to lead all others in the winning sires’ list in 'Stralia. So 'far this season The Welkin is in front with 11 winners of 21 races and £12,597 in stakes. Idnacre follows with 18 winners of 25 races, and £9694. Red Dennis, whose figures read 2—'2—£8550, owes his poosition mainly to Sister Olive’, who won tl:e last Melbourne Cup. Then come St. Anton (26—38 —£7970), Cooltrim (13—-2&—£ 7436), and Eudorus (15 —24—£6657). The New Zealand-bred Beau Soult (Soult —Our Lady) heads the Australa-sian-bred sires with one winner (Beauford) ot two races, and £6234. Others noticeable on the list, are Martian £5566. Comedy King £5486, and Charlemagne 11. £5lOB. Of the first twenty on the list eighteen are imported Concerning Winning Hit’s victory in the New Zealand Derby “Cardigan,” in the Sydney Referee, writes: His win would be particularly gratifying to, Sir George Clifford, who not only owns him, but bred most of I'is family. Winning Hit is by Autumnus from Winning Way, by Cannie Chiel (son of Clanranald) from Lady Wayward, hy Bill of Portland from Elusive, by Trenton from Eleusls (imp.), by Barcaldlne. Autumnus was a rattling good horse, and is by Treadmill (son of Bill of Portland) from Goldleaf, by Stonyhurst, from Golden Crest, by Apremont. The last-mentioned horse also appears on the maternal side of Winning Hit’s pedigree as Galntea, the maternal granddam of Cannie Chiel is a daughter of Apremont. Winning Hit has a double cross of Maxim, and is also inbred to Bill of Portland, who appears in the close removes of his sire and dam.
