ESCAPED PRISONER CAPTURED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Taninarunui, Nov. 22. William Atkinson, who escaped from Taumarunui gaol on November 12 was recaptured by police at Ohura late last night. FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE. Gisborne, Nov, 22. The local freezing works were to have commenced operations this morning at the award rates prevailing last season, but there was no response to the call for labor, the men having determined to await the promulgation of the new award. The directors of the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Company met and decided to withdraw the offer of work at last year's rates and not to renew any offer till further notice. ABUSIVE ANONYMOUS LETTERS. Hamilton, Nov. 22. An extraordinary case opened in the Police Court when William Williams was charged on four informations with having sent an indecent document through the post. Evidence was given that John William Porter received an abusive anonymous letter through the post, accusing him of being the father of Mary O’Cal--1 inane. Mrs. Porter also received a letter ihaking the same accusation and later one signed Mary O’Call inane, en - closing an alleged receipt for the child’s maintenance from Porter. Inquiries were made, but no woman named OKJallinane could be found. It was alleged that she was a. fictitious person and that the letters were sent by Williams in an attempt to wreck Porter’s home. Williams admitted writing the first letter, but not the others. Hand-writing experts considered that all the letters were written by one sonThe hearing of the case was adj arned for a fortnight.
